π¨ Turning Raw Crime Data Into Actionable Intelligence: A Power BI Journey
A Deep Dive Into Crime Trends, Resolution Rates, and Data-Driven Public Safety
In today’s data-driven world, public safety depends on more than just policing — it depends on understanding patterns hidden inside thousands of crime records. Recently, I built a Crime Analysis Dashboard in Power BI that transformed a raw, unstructured dataset into a powerful analytical tool designed for real-world decision-making.
This project challenged my ability to combine data modeling, storytelling, and dashboard design, and the results were eye-opening.
π’ What the Data Revealed — Key Quantitative Insights
Working with 2,500 total reported crimes, I uncovered patterns across time, geography, and behavior, including:
π Yearly Crime Trends
-
2021: ~400 cases
-
2022: ~1,200 cases (a significant rise)
-
2023: ~900 cases
A noticeable spike in 2022 followed by a slight decline.
π Monthly Crime Patterns
Crime peaked in:
-
October: 400 cases
-
September: 309 cases
The lowest-index months were: -
February: 175 cases
-
January: 183 cases
π Weekday Hotspots
A heatmap revealed surprisingly high activity on weekends:
-
Sunday: 375 incidents (highest)
-
Friday: 368
-
Monday: 367
Even mid-week remained active, showing the need for consistent staffing across the week.
π Geographic Insights
Mapped data highlighted clusters in key European regions. Cities across the UK, France, and Germany recorded the highest density of incidents.
π₯ Crimes by Number of People Involved
A breakdown of involvement showed:
-
2 people: 1,504 cases
-
4 people: 297
-
5 people: 251
-
6 people: 222
This indicates that most crimes were small-group or pair-based activities.
✔ Resolution Rate
-
70.04% of crimes were successfully resolved
-
29.96% remain unresolved, affecting public trust and resource planning.
π How I Built the Dashboard
To bring these insights to life, I incorporated:
-
Advanced DAX measures to calculate resolution rates, dynamic KPIs, and monthly trends
-
Time intelligence for year-over-year & month-over-month comparisons
-
Interactive drill-downs for month, year, region, and crime type
-
Geo-mapping visuals for country-wise crime distribution
-
Heatmaps for weekday patterns
-
Power Query ETL for cleaning and transforming raw data
-
A custom UI theme that aligns with a crime-analysis narrative for better storytelling
My goal was simple:
➡️ Turn complex crime data into a clear, intuitive story that decision-makers can understand at a glance.
